Amadeus Original Play vs. Film Adaptation - 1058 Words

Though extremely different in many ways, Amadeus was successfully translated from stage to film not as an adaptation but a parallel work. Peter Shaffer’s stage version is highly theatrical and unfortunately does not literally translate well to film, for multiple reasons. Shaffer and Milos Forman adapted Amadeus in a way that appealed to cinema audiences through cutting characters, expanding upon characters, altering language and narration, set and costume design, plot changes and taking full advantage of the dramatic powers of the camera. Milos Forman said â€Å"The fact that Amadeus was so stylized, so theatrical—well, so un-cinematic, was actually a blessing—it meant we wouldn’t be tempted to merely translate the play to screen, but would be forced to demolish the original, then totally reimagine it as a film.† One of the largest differences between play and film that make the film Amadeus its own piece of art, are the changes in narration. Thou gh called Amadeus, it is really Salieri that occupies the center of the stage and â€Å"conducts† the action of the play. In the film, Mozart’s role is enhanced from the beginning. The film commences with the declaration of â€Å"Mozart! Mozart!† as opposed to the play’s â€Å"Salieri! Salieri!† In the play, Salieri doesn’t mention Mozart in his speech until the end. Gulliver Travels By Swift Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin on November 30 in 1967. Swift's father was an English lawyer died while his wife was pregnant to Jonathan. The object of this revolution was to convince James II (King of England) to abdicate the throne. Swift's last years were a torment. He suffered awful bouts of dizziness, nausea, deafness and mental incapacity. In fact, Swift's harshest critics tried to discredit this book on the grounds that he was mad when he wrote it. But he wasn't. The Travels were published in 1726 and Part IV, which raised the most controversy, was written before Part III and Swift did not enter a mental institution until 1745. Swift was dean of St. Patrick's' Cathedral in Dublin when his novel came out. Since in this book he wrote about political figures, he published the book anonymously. It didn't take long for people to discover that the author was Jonathan Swift. Not only had he been involved in some important and heated political events of the time, but he was also a well-known political journalist and satirist whose style was quite distinctive. Gulliver's Travels is the tale of Lemuel Gulliver as he voyages to the strange lands of Lilliput, Brobdingnag, the kingdom of Laputa, and the land of the Houhnnms. One day he's at an outing with the King and Queen and his house "a box" is kidnapped by a bird and dropped in the sea. It's recovered by an English ship and he moves back to England. Part III, Gulliver goes to the flying island of Laputa and some of its nearby colonies. Gulliver recedes in Part III. Not much happens to him personally, for the most part he recounts what he observes in the way of scientific experiments. Swift uses Gulliver to relate deadpan what he himself considers to be foolish attitudes and activities. Gulliver goes mad in Part IV. Presented with the Houyhnhnms and the Yahoos, Gulliver tries desperately to become a Houyhnhnm, an animal governed entirely by reason. He cannot, of course. Quaker Delegations essays The Quaker delegations of the 1790s were a time in American history that caused much havoc between the leaders of the north and the south. These delegations called for the federal government to immediately end the African slave-trade. The disagreements caused by the Quaker delegations illustrate three critical constructs that were prevalent during this time. One of three critical constructs illustrated within Elliss The Silence is institutional racism. Institutional racism uses the power of an institution to overtly or covertly oppress a socio-racial group. In the 1790s, the United States constitution prevented the federal government [from tampering] with the slave trade during the first twenty years of the nations existence. Therefore, the African slave-trade could not end until 1808. This example of institutional racism illustrates the American Governments push to brand and oppress Africans by treating them as property. Another historical example of institutional racism occurred as late as the 1920s in the south. When blacks were freed from slavery, many moved to the north. However, the southern black population was still large. During this time, much of the black population worked as sharecroppers, who suffered economical abuse from their white employers [winding up] with very little earnings. This historical occurrence qualifies as institutional racism because when black sharecroppers attempted to challenge their landlords, southern laws always favored landlords in disputes leaving blacks at the mercy of their landlords decisions. A second social construct that occurred during the Quaker delegations is cultural racism which overtly or covertly oppresses a socio-racial group through the cultural norms of a society.
